Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an amazing and incredibly diverse set of learners. They come to me with a variety of home life experiences, ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic levels. Every student at my school is provided with free breakfast and lunch and the majority of my students are English language learners. For many of my students, school is the only place in their lives that provides the consistency, support and security that children need in order to grow and learn. They all have something wonderful in common, though. They come to school to be loved and to learn.
School is a place where my students find a sense of security, love and learn to trust.
Love from their teachers and peers enables them to open their minds to embrace learning and develop a growth mindset. It is so inspiring to see the joy of education shine through in children who have so little but appreciate so much!
My Project
Who doesn't get excited when they see a brand new set of Lego blocks? My 2nd graders would love for the opportunity to use Lego bricks to support their STEM activities.
Legos help students think creatively and can turn a math activity into a fun adventure .
Imagine using Legos to understand math concepts like area and perimeter, creating models to build 3-D bar graphs, making arrays to practice multiplication and division or getting creative with polygons to sharpen geometry skills.
My 2nd grade scientists would be so grateful to be able to use Lego manipulatives to build models of the human body, parts of a plant or even models of different animal habitats. The possibilities are as endless as their excitement will be over this project getting funded.
