My amazing and dynamic students are African American and Hispanic students who live in a poor neighborhood in Dallas. My students have see things in their neighborhood that no child should see. Our school is a Title I school with all students receiving free lunch. Many students go without basic necessities like socks, coats, and underwear. Many of their parents do not have a high school education. Some of our students are neglected, have emotional problems, or are being taken care of by their grandparents. Teachers get little parent support. These students require a lot of love, patience, and attention. For these students, an education is the only way out of their environment. Our students are truly a blessing to teach.
Because our library has gone without a librarian for 2 years, it is missing key things a library should have.
The budget for the library is limited, which means it will take years to get all the things a library needs.
LEGOs are an exciting way to introduce children to STEM. My students need hands on activities to expand their STEM knowledge. Their teachers focus on test preparation all day long, without any hands on experiments. LEGO gives a fun way for children to learn while expanding their imagination.
STEM lessons encourage students to experiment, create and take ownership of their learning.
Using LEGOS, my students can learn how to create and code. Kids love to play with LEGOs, and what an opportunity that is for a hands-on relevant learning experience. Students will use the materials to complete building challenges and learn problem solving skills they will need in the future. They can also build buildings and see how they can make them stand and what will make them fall. Students will also practice collaborating, problem solving, and critical thinking to build items that solve real world problems.
