Within my two libraries and middle school Makerlab, my 800 middle and high school students research, read, work in small groups, and discover together. I want students to WANT to learn. I want them to become engaged owners of their learning, to pair the familiar with the unfamiliar, to create something brand new, and to learn from each other.
Our high school library has become a sort of sanctuary for some students...and they love to engage in various activities when visiting!
Puzzles, coloring, playing chess...Legos is the next to add!
We are a fund-deficient district, deeply feeling the effects of dramatically decreased funding at the state level. Gone is money for many items that would increase student engagement and foster a true love of learning and discovery.
My Project
Students learn so much from each other, especially through play and conversation. Our high school library has become a place in which students choose to come to socialize during their down time while engaging in activities such as playing chess, playing games, putting together puzzles, and coloring.
Building with Legos hits all 4Cs: collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking...things that kids do naturally but, once in high school, don't always have time to do, especially with their friends.
And it's so exciting to watch high school students CHOOSE to engage in and socialize over activities such as this during their free time!
