My second graders embody the Aloha spirit. They are loving, compassionate, full of gratitude, and care deeply for our Earth. They like to move, sing, build, and stretch out on the floor with a good book.
My students learn best when they are able to physically connect to our studies through hands-on experiences.
We live in a diverse rural community on the Big Island of Hawaii. Our community is tight-knit, but it is isolated. As a result, we have limited resources. My students are too young to feel the limitations yet, and I'd like to keep it that way. I work hard to ensure that every child in my room has just what he/she needs to feel secure and be successful in school.
My Project
In second grade we get to learn basic economics, like buying, selling, and trading. It would be fun to teach these concepts using a currency that second graders love - LEGO! Students will have the opportunity to earn LEGO through various class activities, just like if they were earning money. Students can save their bricks, trade their bricks with other students, or use their bricks to pay for other materials and activities in class.
At the end of the year, students will get to use their earned and saved LEGO to build a life hack - an invention that solves an everyday problem.
Students will learn to describe and market their invention. They will get to present their invention to members of our school community. Best of all, students will get to keep their LEGO. Many of my students don't have Lego at home. What a great toy to share with their siblings and enjoy over summer!
