My students are extremely motivated second graders who have never participated in an academic competition. Many come from low-income communities and qualify for our free lunch program. The majority of them have parents who speak Spanish as their primary language.
Some of my second graders face hardships at home, but they come to the STEM lab with positive attitudes and are always ready for a new challenge.
They are very curious about the world and especially enjoy the engineering aspect of the STEM lab.
These LEGO Education materials will allow my students to compete in the FIRST LEGO League Jr. competition in the spring and enrich their lives tremendously. They will practice working as a team, cooperating and planning together, as well as act as engineers and learn how to troubleshoot when things go wrong. They will learn that failure is a part of the engineering design process and to have pride in their efforts.
Communicating productively with each other will be an important skill students will practice with this LEGO kit.
Additionally, what is so beneficial is that these materials can be used in subsequent years for successive groups of second graders to participate in LEGO competitions.
