This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are children with mild-moderate learning disabilities in a middle school self-contained class. Having to face trauma on a daily basis and struggling to perform in school puts these students at-risk for high school failure and/or dropping out of high school.
Additionally, Baltimore City students are subjected to not only trauma as a result from the COVID-19 pandemic and learning loss, but family trauma as a result of violence and broken homes.
I would like to provide opportunities for students to engage in enrichment activities to build student and teacher relationships, and perhaps, increase academic performance. Keeping students at school will also keep them safe and even away from being absorbed into their phones!
LEGOs provide students with learning manipulatives to explore math and science, and can engage in social play and build relationships. Students will be able to work togther to build LEGO projects by using their imaginations and following step-by-step directions. Students will be able to use LEGOs to deepen their understanding of mathematics such as addition and subtraction of pieces, and representing fractions (part to whole relationships). Students will also strengthen their knowledge of physics by creating and manipulating LEGOs. Finally, students can use coding and robotics with LEGOs to explore STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
