My second grade class, called Lego City, is a diverse group of students who are excited to learn in our classroom. These children have never experienced a typical school year due to the pandemic. In kindergarten, their experiences suddenly changed dramatically in March from hands-on learning with friends at centers to doing worksheet packets with overwhelmed adults at home or in daycare. In first grade, the children experienced hybrid learning in which 1/2 of their learning took place on the tablet and 1/2 in person at school. There are 23 children in our classroom ranging in ability from prekindergarten to 4th grade reading and math levels. We have a couple of newcomers who are working hard to learn our language. I have many bilingual children in my classroom as there are 5 other languages besides English spoken at home. I teach for the largest district in our state. We are not a Title I school, so funding is limited. We have about 750 students enrolled in our school.
My Project
I plan to host a math family night at the school to help parents understand how we are teaching their children math. I often hear from parents that they didn't learn to add or subtract the way that I am teaching my class. I want students to have a strong number sense so they can do math using a variety of strategies and proving it with multiple representations.
I have come to realize that many of my students cannot identify the number represented on a dice, domino or playing card without touching and counting.
This skill is generally learned around age 4 or 5 and is called subitizing. By getting these simple materials into homes, I can help my students master mathematical concepts while they are playing and building stronger relationships with their families. The Lego City Math Night will help me bridge the learning taking place between home and school. Students will recieve a math fun pack with a deck of cards, 3 colored die and a set of dominoes. I will also have math board games as door prizes. I will photocopy directions for a variety of games so that all of my children can work on skills appropriate for their level of understanding from subitizing to division. In order to reach the maximum number of families, I will teach the event live on TEAMS for families who are not comfortable coming into the school or who lack transportation.
