Help me give my students LEGO bricks to increase their dexterity, problem solving skills, and to use as a tactile tool when planning out their artistic endeavors.
My classroom thrives because of our diverse student population. Inside the art room we are able to use art as a platform to explore different cultures and narratives. Students learn to analyze and respectfully critique one another’s work as a way to learn about one another and question their own preconceived ideas.
I am most excited when I see my students making connections between art and life, or when they discover the relationship between art and history, math, literature and the sciences.
My Project
My life skills students would benefit from having the opportunity to use LEGO bricks as a manipulative for planning and problem solving in the classroom. Specifically, for a lesson based on city planning and design. They will have to think about what makes up a community. What buildings and resources do citizens need? What should the layout of the city be?
LEGO bricks provide my students with a tactile, low-risk way to visualize and test out their ideas.
They can reflect on their choices and make immediate changes without the frustrations that would come from adjusting a drawing or sculpture made from other mediums.
