As a teacher of 4K in a public school district, I work with students who come into my classroom as "at risk" due to an early intervention need. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I look forward to meeting my students where they are and challenging them to rise up to their best learning potential.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love interactive learning and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learner.
My Project
My students love to be creative. I try to allow them ample time to take learning into their own hands each day by providing center and station time for student to explore. Our classroom needs a lego table to help foster stem learning into the classroom. 4k students learn a great deal from hands on manipulation in building with legos. Counting skills, matching, pattens, one to one correspondence are all foundational math skills students need to have a great understanding of before moving on to adding, etc. Legos are a great tool to provide that hands on learning aforementioned. My students would also thrive with some additional paint in our art center. White paint allows students to mix primary colors of paint to make creative and unique art work.
