Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are funny and creative, and unique. Most of them are interested and curious about being in an art class, but there are some students who are fearful because their concept of art is drawing or painting something realistic. As a result, they would rather fail and "save face," rather than try and end up looking foolish.
Many of my students start with a mindset that art and creativity are only for the "special few".
They either have been told by someone that they are horrible at drawing, or that they'd be better off doing something else. Traditional art materials are intimidating and academic. These students just need something familiar that they can relate to. Having something to dip their toe into can open up an entire creative world for them.
The best part of my job is when I get to see students leave their old mindset behind and realize that they can be an artist and they are creative. For many of my at-risk students, this is a huge confidence builder because if they can do art, maybe there are other things they can do that they didn't try before!
My Project
Printmaking is such a fun, exciting, tactile art medium that all students enjoy. It is a great vehicle to allow students to express themselves in a way that is unlike any other medium. Through printmaking, my students will explore themes about self and identity, emotion, mood, and expressive mark-making.
When learning about this art technique, students will learn to problem solve, think creatively, and use mistakes to their advantage.
These are skills that all students can take with them beyond high school no matter what career path they choose.
With these supplies, students will learn to carve their own blocks, ink, and create prints of their work. This project will continue to add to the students' experiences that they may not get elsewhere. Please help me provide this wonderful learning opportunity to my students!
