Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's really hard to drive a car without the keys, and it's really hard to teach students to be technologically literate without devices. This 3D MakerBot printer is the next step in my sixth graders' path towards being technologically savvy.
In Silicon Valley, my STEAM school serves a truly remarkable group of socioeconomically disadvantaged students who genuinely love to learn.
Despite some of the hardships my students have faced, my class shows up ready to learn every day! They are a very caring bunch, and I would love for them to see that other people (some they don't even know) care about them, too! By bringing hands-on materials to my classroom, I hope to inspire my students to think outside the box and strive for non-conventional solutions to common scenarios.
My Project
My students need a 3D printer and extra filament to see their virtual creations in a real-life model, and a HP Chromebook to connect to the 3D printer. My students will use the 3D MakerBot printer in a learning center to reinforce classroom lessons. They can work independently or with a partner to print the virtual creations they designed in class. My students who are below grade level can also access academically appropriate material while my students who have surpassed the sixth grade standards can create enrichment material.
Today's students are considered to be digital natives, but many students in my classroom lack access to technology at home.
This 3D MakerBot printer is one step in closing the gap between the haves and the have-nots. This printer would provide an opportunity for me to teach technology skills while reinforcing math, reading, and spelling curriculum at students' individual levels.
