Reading is such an invaluable tool! My students are cultivating a love of reading and also learning how to build future background knowledge by responding to what they've read in a reader's notebook. We correspond as teacher and student through each individual notebook!
Each one of my students receives free lunch and the majority reside in the neighboring project community.
Despite the hardships that make up their daily lives, they are amazing! Creative, hardworking, eager to learn, each of them brings something different to the table. They have a thirst for knowledge that comes from literature and I am bound to respond to it by exposing them to new worlds! Our world is so interactive with iPads, phones, and computers. I want my students to be interactive with their books, their writing, their knowledge! Please help me expose these students to a world of possibilities through reading and writing!
My students need 60 composition notebooks, a pencil sharpener, glue, and other supplies to create interactive reading notebooks! These composition notebooks will be personalized by each child with colored paper, glitter, pictures, and other things to make them their own. Inside will be responses to things they've read in class, answers to writing prompts, and responses to my notes. My students will learn that it is okay to have an opinion about everything they read. They'll learn how to read for understanding. Some may even learn that they'd like to write a novel of their own one day!
The globe is the unit of analysis.
I may not be able to give my students a trip around the world, but I can through the power of reading and responding to reading. We are going Beyond the Brick this school year and students will be exploring learning outside the confines of the brick and mortar! Please help me expose these students to the world!
