My students need help comparing grocery ads, making correct payments for purchases, keeping accurate financial records, and reconciling cash on hand with shopping records.
Our school is located in a very rural area and consists of about 560 students K-12. We are in Northeast Potter County, basically in the North Central part of Pennsylvania. The students in my classroom are there to learn the fundamentals of "getting ready for life". Thus, we learn the basics of cooking, cleaning, finances, employment, math, reading, post secondary graduation goals, and becoming adults. The class serves students who vary from learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, ADHD, autism, EBD, Cerebral Palsy, and specific learning disabilities.
My Project
For this project I chose a lot of games. I chose transitions card games (Face to Face Transitions Card Games) that will help when they move from elementary to middle school, middle to high school, and high school to college life. Having active discussions about these life changes are essential for my life skills instruction.
The students in my room need to feel like they're having fun (but secretly, they're learning).
Another game I chose was Pay Day. This game will help them learn budgeting, money skills, and taking a loan out from the bank. The Game of Life is another essential game for teaching about money. I love that these games exist so that students are able to learn while having fun! Using the Grocery Cart game and the Discount game will help them apply understanding of money, percentages, discounts, coupons, etc. I also chose the Escape from Anger Island because there are a lot of emotions in my classroom, and sometimes the students aren't sure how to deal with their feelings and emotions.
