Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 25 amazing students this year in my second grade class. Many of my students come from homes that are considered low income and our neighborhood has a high poverty rate. Despite our communities struggles, I am fully aware that I need to make a difference in their lives while they are with me. My students learn in an environment where we collaborate, we share, we help each other and we work as a team.
This year I want to be able to give my students many opportunities to have a safe place to experiment, inquire, build and collaborate with STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities.
I believe that incorporating this learning into our day will encourage the students to learn to question how and why things work. They will predict and learn which ways work better and why. They will learn to solve problems, collect data and adjust their attempts to be more successful.
In order for this learning to occur, it is imperative to have the needed supplies and materials ready and available to them.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting range in STEM ideas. I requested blocks and gears for students who want to build and create movement. I requested roller coaster creating so that students can plan, build, try it out and discuss options to make it better.
I want many different types of building materials so that they can experiment with blocks, marbles and gears to explore their creativity.
I requested white boards so that they can draw out their plans and easily make changes to them. These will be a very important tool in planning and adapting their plans to create projects that work even better. In addition, I requested two wobble chairs so that wiggly students can move and focus while working.
