"Children are not passive absorbers of knowledge; rather, they are active constructors of concepts." ~ Bronson and Merryman
I teach twenty four and five year olds.
They are very active, curious, and always eager to see what the day will bring. I also have mainstreamed special education children in my class. Eighty percent of the students at our Title I school qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Our school is located in a high poverty area and we have very few resources. Our school budget was cut again this year.
My Project
My students are in need of sand trays and Lite Brites to supplement the sensory aspect of learning. The sand trays and Lite Brites would bring another tool into my classroom that would ensure that I am reaching all students with varying learning styles.
Mistakes are part of the learning process.
Unfortunately, mistakes can also be frustrating for young learners. Many students are able to utilize the sand trays with more efficiency than pencil and paper. Mistakes are easily corrected or erased in a salt tray. With these trays, my students will be able to practice proper letter formation. Both the salt trays and the Lite Brites will reinforce letter knowledge along with development of their fine motor skills. These materials will reinforce pre-reading skills and help improve fine motor skills as well.
Students will be engaged in important, developmentally appropriate work that will lay a foundation for reading. This project will make it possible for my students to actively engage in learning activities and will give them the opportunity to use exciting materials to reinforce skills.
These materials will allow my students to feel success as they actively work at their own pace and on their own skill level.
