This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a high poverty. They are accustomed to violence, hunger, and crime. Despite this exposure, my students enter the classroom each day with a smile on their face eager to learn.
Everyday, I focus on providing them with the necessary skills to avoid a lifetime filled with violence, hunger, and crime.
I expose them to learning opportunities that will lead them out of this lifestyle. I let them know they can be anything in the world, they just have to work hard for it.
My Project
At my school in Detroit, Michigan, we are not provided with hands-on manipulative materials that help support reading and mathematics. As we learn more about education and the way children learn, it is important to use additional materials besides paper and pencil.
With these materials, students will work in learning centers to help develop their skills in a hands-on setting.
The materials will be used to develop letter identification, letter-sound relationships, word building, place value, and number identification skills. For example, the letter snap cubes will be used to build words and the dice will be used for counting games.
Eventually, I hope for my students to make connections between the hands-on manipulative materials with their understanding outside of the classroom.
