Teaching physics at a small charter high school has many great opportunities such as small class size and a more personalized education. However, it also means that we have limited resources for our students. At Leadership High School juniors and seniors have the opportunity to take physics and learn about how and why the world works. My goal is to engage my physics students in inquiry based curriculum so that they can form their own understandings of physics concepts. There are many supplies and demonstrations that allow students to engage in good scientific inquiry. One of our units revolves around electricity and circuits. In order to fully understand circuits and how they work, students must first understand how charges interact. The study of how and why charges interact is the study of electrostatics. One of the best demonstrations that is not only engaging but also evokes probing questions is the Van de Graaf generator. The generator is essentially a machine that generates a big electric charge. The generator can then be used to demonstrate how and why like charges repel, the physics behind the lightening bolt, and even make physics students' hair stand on end. In fact, the Van de Graaf generator is often called the lightening generator because it can generate a safe lightening bolt that amazes students while engaging them in learning through their own questions and answers. The Van de Graaff generator would afford my students the opportunity to fully engage in inquiry learning about electricity. Thank you for your consideration of our proposal.
