Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is made up of mostly Hispanic children who are from various backgrounds. There are several different levels of language ability including some students who are brand new to our country. I love seeing how my students support each other and help their classmates learn English. They are very kind and compassionate children.
I have an amazing group of fourth-grade students this year.
They are all very special and continue to astound me every day with their curiosity, learning, and kind hearts. I can honestly say I love working with these children because of their awesome personalities.
My school is a Title I school in Virginia. Many students here come from low-income families. We are fortunate to have some partners in education that help students with basic school supplies, backpacks, food bags, and even winter coats. It is such a blessing to have a community that supports education, and I want to do my part to give my students the best fourth-grade year ever.
My Project
Legos are an all time favorite for most kids. They love to play and create with the colorful little bricks. Now, that imaginative play can be used to facilitate learning. In reading, students can recreate the setting and plot of the story. In science, students can learn to code using some new materials from Lego, which are included in this project.
Learning with Legos is highly engaging and motivational for students.
It has a range of uses and the options are endless. I had these Lego sets at a previous school where I worked with 6th grade students. I quickly became a believer in the power of learning with Legos. My students created wonderful stories surrounding their creations. I was also able to check knowledge of comprehension in the books they were reading based on the Lego recreation of a scene from the story. I want to give my current students the same opportunity to be creative and enjoy not just playing with Legos, but learning with them.
