My Students

I teach a class of eighth grade diverse learners who want to do well each day. They are helpful to each other and want to see others succeed as much as they want to succeed themselves. Each day I am greeted with smiles and "Good mornings". It's how they roll.

My students attend a large urban middle school and come from very diverse backgrounds.

Close to three-fourths of my students are economically disadvantaged, and a quarter has limited English proficiency. In addition, special education students are fully integrated into our school. Despite the fact that some of the student achievement indicators for my school are below the state average, the amount of growth our students are making each year is above the state average in math, putting them on track to catch up with their peers. This is because these students want to learn and the staff here puts significant effort into ensuring that they do learn.

My Project

I teach in a block schedule, so my classes are 80-90 minutes long. The students love having the longer class periods when working on projects, but sometimes it is a long time to stay focused on learning. The LEGOs serve a dual purpose, they will be used for brain breaks, but also to enhance the curriculum.

I will be able to add in more tactile learning with the LEGOs.

The students can show their understanding of the water cycle, or new vocabulary words or the moment Cornwallis surrendered to Washington ending the Revolutionary War by building them with LEGOs, they could just build a castle and use them to recharge their brains. The possibilities are endless.
