Help me give my students the opportunity to create, build, use their imagination, boost their creativity, develop their architectural & engineering skills & increase engagement in various subject areas using Legos.
I am privileged to teach 25 fabulous first graders (Firsties as I refer to them) in a small country school serving roughly 300 students. Our little school has a growing English learner population as well as a socioeconomic divide between the wealthier and the poorer families.
Many of my families are unable to help at home due to the ever changing curriculum and the way it is delivered or lack of English spoken at home.
Many of my students have few resources at home to help. Therefore, it is my goal to ensure that each student has the opportunity in class to learn and has an equitable experience in our classroom.
Thank you for reading about my fabulous Firsties and considering donating to our classroom!
My Project
My first graders see the world with their eyes but can change it with their hands. LEGOs are a hands-on activity and a terrific way to develop minds, foster independence, create enthusiasm, and make learning fun. I have a classroom of brilliant learners!
Today's learners are tomorrow's problem solvers!
STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) is the new buzzword (acronym) in education. But, it is as vital as reading and writing. LEGOS equip students with skills to be creative thinkers. LEGOS can be used as great story starters. My students will create a scene with LEGOS then write a story about their creations. This helps make writing exciting! This also engages my many English language learners!
LEGOS also help make abstract concepts tangible by taking teaching away from worksheets and putting learning into the hands of students. LEGOS will also assist in my part, part, whole math lessons. My students will be given LEGOS and instructed to count the studs (bumps) For example 6 on one LEGO brick and 4 on another LEGO brick, then they will find the whole, a brick with 10 studs.
The ability to access all of my students' strengths is crucial for their learning success. With the use of LEGOS this is possible.
I teach in a highly impoverished school. Most of my students' families cannot afford LEGOS. Having these available in the classroom would add something special to the curriculum.
