Do you know what makes our school the best place in the world? Other than the rock star teachers and creative little learners, it's the community that surrounds us. It's our classroom community, our school community and our small little community where we all live and support each other. My students come to school excited to learn about and explore their world every day! Our school is the only elementary school in our small town, so we really are a tight-knit family. That means if they need something, we work for it. If they make a mistake, they learn and grow from it. And if we can make our learning more meaningful and fun, we do it! Our students come to school excited to learn about and explore their world every day! However, back in August, many of our students and staff were exposed to a world they've never seen. Our community slowly began to disappear under water. Hurricane Harvey impacted many of our lives, but wouldn't know the loss by my the kiddos bright and shining faces you see each day, or the perseverance they show, or the kindness and friendship they pour from their hearts!
My Project
This project is for additional materials to create/complete our Lego Learning binders. I would like to implement more of a “Soft Start” to our traditional morning work activities to help transition those students who may need some extra time waking up and warming up their brains for learning. My students would enter the classroom, follow their morning procedures, then choose a binder to work on individually or with a group of students. They would find their Lego activity binder which would have a pouch with legos and a plate to attach them. Activities would include creating sight words, shapes and patterns, math word problems, and various other fun, and engaging challenges. Using these Lego activity binders will encourage cooperative learning among students and help their brains begin to engage in hands-on learning before beginning our lessons for the day
