Help me give my students LEGO bricks for the ability to be creative when presenting their research and improve their literacy, language, and motor skills.
I have the pleasure of teaching 5 Kindergarten students in Ogden, UT. All of my students have hearing impairments and use amplification to help them hear (i.e hearing aids, cochlear implants, etc). My students use Listening and Spoken Language as their mode of communication and attend a specialized Kindergarten to help them develop these skills. It's my job to teach them specific listening and language skills based on their need with the hope that after Kindergarten the students can be successfully mainstreamed into their home school.
My students are very motivated to learn and are beginning to learn how to utilize research to find information.
This makes my job as their teacher so much fun since we can incorporate writing, reading, math and science standards while learning. We are using different techniques like dioramas, Jamboard and storyboxes to present information. I would love to use LEGO bricks to help build their motor skills and show them how to build bears when doing our bear theme.
My Project
If these LEGO materials are funded, I will use the build-a-LEGO book to teach my students how to learn and to manipulate and use various types of LEGO bricks to build a bear (polar, black or grizzly).
Each child will be researching a specific type of bear and presenting that information on the specific bear to help improve their literacy, writing and speaking goals.
The LEGO bear will be an important part of their presentation. Therefore, numerous types and colors of LEGO bricks are needed to build the bears.
Using these types of manipulates will help the students improve their motor skills along with learning different types of ways to present information, a skill which is needed throughout life.
