I am currently half way through my second year of teaching. In our classroom, we have 22 students who come from a multitude of diverse backgrounds.
When students walk into our classroom, I want them to forget about their worries and focus more on the endless possibilities which education can provide.
Teaching in a Title I school where 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch and breakfast, these kiddos don't have the necessities at home to keep them alert and healthy. Some of my students have lived through difficult upbringings and look to school as their safe haven. Flexible seating gives students a chance to get the wiggles out and open their mind to creativity. There are times when students' home lives become such a distraction that they just need a safe place to relax and forget about their worries. I feel as if more flexible seating options would encourage a student to focus on their work while getting the wiggles out at the same time.
My Project
This year, I incorporated flexible seating into the classroom. We have 3 different seating options for students to share. When working independently, students are able to focus, and complete their assignments with minimal distraction.
I had no idea how much impact changing something as small as a chair could be.
We have now been in school for roughly 5 months and the attention span of my students is still strong. My students seem to have a sense of calm when working in their own special seat. Currently, many of my students are still using traditional chairs, and as a result we must form a rotation. This project will allow students in my classroom to utilize flexible seating more consistently.
