Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"To understand their world, we must be willing to immerse ourselves in that world. We must embrace the new digital reality. If we cannot relate, or if we don't get it, we won't be able to make schools relevant to the current and future needs of the digital generation." -- Ian Jukes
My students love school!!!!
They want to do their best every day when they walk into our classroom.
But they face many obstacles that most people would never deal with in their entire lives. My students live in a large city, and unfortunately, in extreme poverty. The difficult economic conditions have caused many of my families hardships that are tough to imagine. Families are struggling everywhere throughout the United States but for my students, it seems to be doubly tough. Parents find it hard to participate in their child's education as much as they would like. Many of these parents come home on the weekends after living elsewhere - wherever they can find some work. My students are being cared for by extended family, friends or even neighbors. My students are provided most of their learning materials by me or the very generous people from Donors Choose.
My Project
There are so many wonderful educational and academically challenging websites that would really benefit and encourage my students to excel. The problem is I do not have the technology necessary to support them and aid them in becoming more technologically savvy in a world that demands our future leaders and citizens to be capable and adept in this area. My students need four HP laptops and wired mice to help them become technologically and academically ready for the future. With a set of four HP laptops, I could have groups of children work on the computer for at least an hour per day. That would be such a tremendous boost since they now get less than 20 minutes at most per week since they removed the classroom computers that I once had. These laptops could help the students with learning disabilities, as well as the accelerated student that needs enrichment to increase their skills. There are so many resources available - if I could only provide my students with the access we once had.
They deserve to have the opportunity to learn the skills that they will need using technology.
I just have to find a way to help them. Please consider helping me teach them the skills that will give them the tools to be viable and responsible citizens for their future.
