Providing students with any means necessary to increase learning is my goal. Learning with a Beat integrates music throughout the elementary school curriculum to enhance learning. Through music the classroom environment will provide an atmosphere that will allow students to reach their full potential. Using Brain Based learning, students will improve thinking skills, be more motivated to learn, and increase creativity.
I teach 5th grade math, science, and social studies at a rural elementary school. I have a very mixed socioeconomic classroom that is multicultural. My class includes special needs students as well as gifted.
Students come to class from many different situations and environments. As with different students come different learning styles. Students face very different challenges in the classroom. Offering a students a learning environment that is safe, comfortable, and stress free can help students with some of these challenges. Students who are more kinesthetic, musical, and artistic will have a greater opportunity to be creative and excel academically if a musical environment is provided. Through the brain based learning program, music offers an environment that allows students to enhance their abilities and effectively get into a more focused and relaxed learning state. Music stimulates the brain and allows students to access reserve capacities and increase creativity and learning.
Research states that music provides a learning environment that is conducive to learning. Music relaxes the mind and lowers stress levels that inhibit learning by serving as an energizer. Listening to music can trigger a tranquil state that calms and soothes which leads to faster learning. It also revives bored or sleepy learners by increases blood and oxygen flow to the brain and allows for better focus to remain on task. Music is also stimulating and can allow learners to decode complex ideas more easily. By inspiring emotion, music clears a path to long term memory. By using music to enhance learning, ideas and lessons are more easily put into memory. Music can stimulate creativity and increases the joy of learning.
