Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a neighborhood that's predominately Hispanic and eighty-five percent of the students who attend the school are from low-income families. While parents try their best to be involved in their student's learning, it can be hard and most of the time, students do not get the help they need at home. This is where I step in and try my best to provide everything I can in my classroom for my students.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but the one thing in common they each have is the love for learning.
It has been fascinating to see how much students get comfortable with their Spanish and to hear non-native speaking students engaged in a Spanish conversation. It is truly beautiful to hear!
My Project
My students got a taste of flexible seating before the end of the school year. Students were exposed to different seating options and it increased their focus. While students were able to participate in some flexible seating, there wasn't enough seating options for everyone in my classroom. This project will complete our goal of having a full flexible seating classroom for future first graders who enter my room.
Completing this project will help encourage students to continue learning even if they move their bodies and it also creates a warm environment.
I encourage my students to move their bodies by allowing brain breaks, but sometimes it's hard moving your body while sitting on chairs. This project will expand our seating options and students will now be able to choose from stools, along with yoga balls, wobble stools, and bean bag chairs from a previous project. Encouraging students to continue to move will help them focus even more on what we are trying to learn in first grade! Students will also be able to use floor seats to find the perfect spot to learn. The light filters from this project will allow provide students with a warm environment where they can always feel safe when they enter the classroom. An amazing benefit of having flexible seating is that our materials can be easily cleaned and fixed for the next school year!
