My students need continued support on our move to flexible seating! We have had great success so far and are looking to add new items in our classroom including a high top table and bean bags.

My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they are able to persevere and find ways to further their education each day.
My classroom is a mixture of mainstream, ESL, Special Education and Gifted learners.
The best way to meet their needs is to find ways to differentiate-which includes HOW they learn and what they are seated on all day!
We spend our days teaching and learning while also trying to work through some serious emotional struggles. I have currently started to implement flexible seating slowly into my classroom. The kids are loving it! I would love to transform my classroom into an oasis. If I am able to give them the flexible seating options-they will be able to take ownership in their learning!
My Project
I have been given the opportunity to loop with my students for a second year. We will continue to learn in the same classroom for a third year in a row. Having flexible seating options in the classroom would give them the ownership they SO need/want in their lives as well as give them the chance to wiggle and "flex" throughout the day.
We always hear that it is good to give your students choices.
Why then do we very rarely give our students choices in where and how they sit in class each day? Not only have my students started to be more attentive in their learning after being given the choices (in the few options they have at the minute) but they also have a larger sense of empowerment throughout the day.
I am asking for specific items to help encourage students to "think outside the box" through their learning. They will be able to stand while learning, sit on comfortable bean bags and wiggle-all while working through difficult math problems or writing a five paragraph essay.
I foresee the high top table and chairs being very popular. I have a number of students who love to stand up when they are frustrated or need a break. It would be useful to have a place for students to stand or sit and still be able to work. The bean bag chairs would be a wonderful alternative to a chair. They will be comfy and still a perfect "spot" to learn. The saucer chairs would be an excellent way for students to sit in a place that isn't a desk and still be able to learn and feel comfortable!
