My students need balance ball chairs and wobble chairs for exercise and flexible seating options!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Some of my students are children that have been dealt a difficult hand in life. Many of them are poverty stricken and over 90% of the students receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their economic status. Despite all of the challenges they face, they are inquisitive third graders who are eager to learn. My students' enthusiasm for learning is just as contagious as their smiles and laughter!
Due to recent changes in our large urban district, classroom sizes are larger this upcoming school year, which will inevitably affect students' ability to focus.
With having to adjust to more students in the classroom, it is very important that my students have plenty of options where they can move, wiggle, and learn at the same time. Some of my students come from homes where they have experienced traumatic events which affects their academics and social-emotional skills. Some of my students have a cognitive or learning disability, while others have a hard time staying in their seats, or have difficulty focusing on the tasks required of them in class.
Teaching younger students', I'm reminded daily that their bodies are in constant motion. My students only have one physical education class per week, and due to weather conditions, have indoor recess for most of the winter. With students spending most of their days at school, they should be able to move freely while they learn.
"Ms F, can I stand while I work?" "Can I sit on the floor?" These are questions students ask daily as they work, to avoid having to sit in hard, stationary chairs for long periods of time.
I have to remind students to sit in their chair correctly simply because a stationary chair doesn't give them the physical movement their bodies need. My students have asked for different options in the classroom to make sitting more comfortable and to allow them to get their wiggles out while they work! We did some research together and my students came up with some alternative seating options. Each option requested will allow students to move, while staying on task and focusing on their work.
Some students like to move, while others may have hyperactivity, so the balance ball chairs, wobble chairs, and bouncy bands will allow them to bounce safely without hurting themselves. They requested so many options that are mobile in case students want to move to another part of the room, and allow EVERY child to be comfortable and productive! All of the seating options are kid-inspired, research based and promote healthy lifestyles.
Having a variety of seating options will allow students to engage in 60 minutes of activity by using the healthy seating options around the classroom. Gone are the days of "Do I have to sit in my chair?" This will combine physical activity with active learning in the class; promoting healthier lifestyles!
