Learning Ways to Manage Anger and Handle Stress through Creativity

I am the school counselor at College Street Academy which is under the umbrella of Burke Alternative School. We are a high school program for tenth thru twelveth grades. I have 45 students enrolled. My students are all over the age of 16. They have dropped out of their conventional high schools for a vast variety of reasons. Some were having problems with impulsivity, drugs, some were expelled for behaviors, some have become pregnant, but all did not fit into the atmosphere of our overpopulated high schools where they become just a number and feel lost. Here at College Street Academy, they are given the opportunity to obtain their high school diploma's after having been out in the public and they have a better understanding of the importance of their high school diploma. As the counselor, I am responsible for ensuring each student meets the N.C. requirements for graduation.
I also focus on character education as the majority of these students have not had any form of a stable family life, with a majority of them having been homeless as some time in their lives. They come from families that are riddled with alcoholism, drug abuse, sexual permiscuity, domestic violence and neglect. They have not had the opportunity to have appropriate responses to disappointments and anger modeled for them in their home lives. Art therapy is an extremely beneficial tool in learning how to manage anger. In our small rural community, we have one ceramics place of business. This is the "Amazing Glaze" owned and managed by Pam. I would like for each of my students to have the opportunity to experience a meaningful and appropriate way to handle stress and anger through art. All of the materials that are needed for this project, plates, paints, studio time and firing of the completed plates would be provided by Pam at Amazing Glaze.
