A typical day in our high school library rarely involves "quiet time." Our students use technology to collaborate, engage in discourse, produce content, and explore via technology throughout the entire day starting before school and two hours after school.
My students are highly motivated, pursue academic excellence, and have diverse backgrounds.
Many of our students are at a disadvantage when it comes to having resources to use technology from home, which is why our library has created a maker space area and provides access for student use before and after school, in addition to the regular school day. Our school is a magnet school in which students have to apply to be accepted based on their conduct, academic performance, and attendance. Our vision is to prepare our students for the future utilizing innovative teaching and learning approaches.
My Project
My students need a 3D printer to learn about and create figures from a computer screen in order to deepen their understanding by having a tangible item in their hands to examine.
A 3D printer is a critical component to include in our library maker space which promotes STEM-based education and exploration.
Hands-on experiences such as 3D-printing revolutionize learning by giving students opportunities to develop problem-solving skills, be innovative, and analyze outcomes. Students learn best while engaging in discovery and learning by doing as they figure out how to adjust accordingly, based on their experiments and designs.
