Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a small urban public school which serves a mix of students of families with a long history in this community as a well as a growing population of newcomers who have varying degrees of English and school experience. We have a large population of English Language Learners and over 95% of our students qualify for free lunch. Most of my incoming class of second-graders have been in the same class together since Kindergarten. They are well-connected to one another and often interact like siblings.
My students are engaged, interactive learners and are constantly learning to build relationships with others.
The community which surrounds our school is impoverished and often unsafe. School is an escape from these unfortunate circumstances. With such a mix of students who are new, permanent, or in-between, we give special attention to growing our classroom community and strive to be a welcoming place for all. My students have big hearts and crave to be connected with one another at school.
My Project
The time has come to spruce up our classroom and create a more welcoming environment! When I moved to this school two years ago, I made do with the rug that was provided. However, it was a bit dated and did not have clearly marked personal spaces. My students have endured having to define the space for themselves as well as being a bit too close to each other. We spend a lot of time on the rug for instruction, so I have chosen a new rug to give my students their own personal space during this important learning time. I know from previous experience that having a defined space makes a huge difference in their focus and their ability to turn and talk to a partner. We can spend more time learning rather than settling disagreements about personal space. It also helps with transitions to and from our desks and allows for more choices when someone needs to move. I want to ensure my students are comfortable in their learning space at all times.
My students remain more focused during instruction and transitions when they are clear about where to sit or move to throughout the day.
The product that I have selected will help my students by giving them ample personal space to maximize learning time and their ability to make effective personal learning choices at school.
