Learning Together by Playing Team Sports at Recess

My Students

Our students live in a small rural school district. Many students have attended school with one another since kindergarten. It is so special to hear all of the many connections that exist between friends and families in this tight-knit community.

There is something intangible and special about the culture of our school.

Classrooms are decorated with care. The hallways are filled with smiles that you can still see behind masks and friendly conversations between students and staff members. Staff genuinely like each other and their students and participate as a coach or an advisor to at least one extracurricular activity, if not more. Families in the community are an important part of decision-making.

It is a great place to be a student and a teacher.

My Project

In the last 2 years, students have missed out on a lot of opportunities to practice the important social skills of collaboration and communication. So, our 7th graders are piloting a new program in our school where they get 20 minutes of recess every day in which they get to play team sports!

During recess time, students have the opportunity to play basketball, kickball or soccer or to socialize in an environment where they receive constant support and guidance about how to socialize in a positive and constructive manner.

Very often, the adults play games alongside students, modeling for them what it looks like to be a team player, to share encouragement for your teammates and to celebrate when your opponent does something well. Students also use this time to talk through any social or personal struggles they are facing in their day.

We have seen great growth from students in this program this year and we would greatly appreciate any support in helping to grow our supply of recess equipment!
