I teach in a wonderful school that's located in a small, rural area. Our school is full of caring, inquisitive and amazing students. They brighten my day and make coming to work something that I love doing daily. I teach third grade and I cannot imagine a more perfect age group to work with. My students are at the age at which they are gaining independence, but are still eager to learn and soak up the world around them. I learn just as much from them as they do from me.
Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn." That is my goal for my kiddos each school year.
I want each of them to be totally engrossed and involved in the learning process so that their lives will be forever changed because of what they have learned.
My Project
Third grade is the year that we start novel studies with our students at my school. The kids are getting to be more independent in their reading, and they are ready to read more complex texts. I am always in search of a great children's novel to read together with my students that will inspire them, teach them an important life lesson, or just make them laugh.
Gooney Bird Greene by Lois Lowry is the perfect book to kick off the school year with a 3rd grade class!
The main character is hilarious and has a wild imagination. She is a natural-born storyteller, and spends most of the book spinning tales for her classmates. I would LOVE to use this book as a mentor text for writing. At the beginning of the year, we focus on learning to write narrative stories. Gooney Bird would be such a great "teacher" for the students because she is a storyteller herself. This book is full of things that I can pull out and expand upon in our writing workshop lessons such as...using hooks to grab your reader's attention, adding details to your story, using dialogue between the characters, and much more.
