My students need mentor books like "What do Authors Do?" To assist with their Writer's Workshop including fiction, nonfiction, how-to and drawing books.
Kindergarten is often believed to include nap time and lots of playtime...that is not the case. These kids learn to read, to add and subtract and are expected to control their natural energy at this young age! Kindergarten is the building block in which all grades build from.
My students are amazing.
I have an average of 25 students that range in abilities. Approximately 49% of our school is on free and reduced lunch; therefore their is a high level of low SES students.
Our school is extremely family oriented and prides themselves on getting parents and families involved. There are many parent nights, fun nights and curriculum nights to get them involved.
My Project
We are looking to get the mentor texts that are used within our Writer's Workshop curriculum, therefore these materials will be used on a daily basis. Some of the books we requested will be used during the fiction unit, some non-fiction and some opinion writing. These books will be read aloud and also referenced throughout the lessons. The students will also be able to use these books as examples for their personal writing as well as to encourage them to try new things within their writing.
All of these books like "What do Authors Do?" And "Peter's Chair" will be such a gift to our classroom.
They will give students a chance to read, study and listen to these mentor authors. The students will be able to try out new things in their writing as taught through the Writer's Workshop mini lesson and viewed throughout these mentor texts.
