Ms. Mayotte from Memphis TN is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need multicultural crayons, fat pencils, personal writing boards, and music CDs to enhance our learning through music.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Each day my students are engaged in learning through song, chants, read alouds and use art to express themselves through drawing and writing. My classroom always as a buzz and can sometimes be a little loud. We are singing, moving, and learning by any means necessary.
This year, my students are kindergarteners most with no prior early childhood experiences.
My school is located in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area of Memphis that is surrounded by blight. My students are very talkative and energetic with great potential to become good students when given a solid academic early childhood foundation. Although my school is a Title I school our funds are used to supply additional personnel instead of instructional materials. We do not receive school fees and do not have a PTA organization to raise funds to purchase materials for our classrooms. We are only give $100 at the beginning of the year to purchase supplies. I have often supplemented this with my own money.
The resources requested are to assist my students in learning to write letters and numbers. Although, I started the year with crayons and pencils many of my students have had trouble gripping the smaller crayons and pencils. Having the correct writing instrument is key for those whose fine motor skills are not developed. Because most of my students are not able to write their names or numbers, the personal writing boards will allow me to have whole group writing instruction. The fat pencils and crayons will allow my students to write and draw in their journals using writing instruments that are a good fit for their little hands. As a firm believer in singing to learn, the use of the music Cd's will allow my students opportunities to engage in music and movement activities while learning concepts such as days of the week, months of the year, counting, etc.
Your donation of these supplies will enhance my kindergarten instruction and aid in my desire to close the educational gap and provide my students with a high quality education despite where their school is located or their parent's socioeconomic status.
