Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Writing should be fun and engaging. With a journal in hand and picture dictionaries, my students will be motivated to write every day new Spanish words and Spanish high frequency words, and they will better know and understand what they are writing because of the visuals the dictionaries provide.
I teach 48 students from a highly diverse population, about 30 of them are ELL students and most of them have not had any formal schooling.
83% of our students are free or reduce lunch. The students have limited resources at home; some even live in shelter homes or with extended family members. They are part of our Spanish Immersion Program and all of my students come eager to learn their second or even their third language. As their Spanish Kindergarten Teacher, I have the greatest opportunity to influence them in their love of learning!!
My Project
These writing journals will encourage students to write their new Spanish words with pride. The dictionaries will help them have a visual of the word as well as the flip cards. My students will be able to write their new learned Spanish words all year long and be part of their end of the year portfolio. Parents and students will be able to enjoy and keep adding words even after kindergarten. The dictionaries will be placed in the students´ classroom library to enjoy through out the day.
