Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We like to move our bodies and work our brains everyday in kindergarten, and one of the best ways in which we accomplish this is through the use of music throughout our school day. We cannot fully utilize my huge library of music though because it is scattered everywhere and in different forms.

I am a Kindergarten teacher at a K-6 elementary school in a very high-need community.

Over 65% of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunches, and in the past three years the Hispanic population has grown so much that in our Kindergarten classes, over 50% of our students are of Hispanic backgrounds. We love the diversity! But it is frustrating to try to cover so many needs with dwindling resources! Music helps us accomplish a lot in my classroom. We use music to exercise and get out the wiggles, but we also use music to work our brains and learn new things! One of the easiest ways for students to learn new concepts and information is to put it to music. We sing songs about the weather, the months of the year, the colors, the letters of the alphabet, the letter sounds, and the holidays. We use music to help us learn how to count forwards and backwards, spell sight words, and remember word families. We use music everyday!

My Project

As you can imagine, I have a lot of music, and it is in many different formats: cassette tapes, compact discs, and some on my personal MP3 player. The downfalls of my current system is that it takes a lot of room to store all of my music and it takes a lot of time for me to find the specific songs I am looking for at a moment's notice. I am requesting an iPod and a speaker system to be used solely in my classroom. An iPod will allow me to organize all of my music in one location, and I can have it all sorted by the concepts it helps teach or the style of the music (i.e. music for rest time, music for moving around the room, etc). My students will benefit greatly from these resources. I won't have to spend so much class time searching for the music I want, and I think I will be more likely to incorporate even more music into my daily plans because it will be so much more accessible.

There is more and more research coming out everyday showing how music in the classroom has positive effects on student learning and achievement.

I want my students to experience those positive effects! I also want my students to feel the effect that music has on our emotions and learn to appreciate many different kinds of music. Your donations to this project will help make my dreams a reality!
