Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager, enthusiastic, hard working and creative. All of them speak a language other than English at home, and are learning English at school. All of them receive free lunch because of their low socio economic status. My goal is to provide my students with rich educational experiences that support them as they build their reading, listening, speaking and writing skills in English. I also create opportunities for engineering, problem solving and hands on science activities which encourage them to use higher level thinking and academic language. Your support for my students shows that you see their potential as contributors to our community.
My Project
We currently learn our academic content through songs and chants, adding rhythm instruments as we sing our songs will increase student engagement and memory. Our teaching team has put together songs and chants to go with our thematic units of study through the year. Students sing songs to learn about the economy, ecosystems, geology, government and states of matter. These songs and chants make academic content vocabulary and concepts more memorable for our students. I think that by adding musical instruments such as shakers, drums, tambourines and sand blocks, the students will find these concept chants to be even more memorable and engaging.
