Learning to Take Care of Living Things in our Environment

Help me give my students the experience of watching the process of living organisms developing into adults, then taking care of the organisms while enjoying their addition to our science classroom.

My Students

I have seventy students for science in grades three through six. I have awesome students who love to learn, and they love learning about our environment. Most of my students are Native Americans, belonging to the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

My Project

The materials and critters that I am requesting, will be added to our science classroom along with our River Tank Ecosystem. The students will observe the growth of tadpoles into adult frogs and butterfly larvae into adult butterflies. Along with caring for these critters, the students will enjoy the experience of caring for six anole lizards in a tank which recreates an environment where they would live naturally. We are soon expecting the River Tank Ecosystem which resembles a creek environment with fish, crawdads, and a red-eared slider turtle. The students are observing and caring for these along with the tadpoles/frogs, butterflies, and anoles.

Learning how the critters are important to the ecosystem is our main objective while caring for them helps students to understand the importance of a balanced ecosystem.

Hopefully, these experiences in the classroom will inspire students to get out and broaden their own personal experiences in their communities. Possibilities could even include students picking up on ideas that will lead to careers in the outdoors.
