Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are outgoing and eager to learn new things every day. They love reading and enjoy special projects that help them reach beyond their goals. My students have strong reading skills and require challenges to continue growing.
We are a kindergarten to fifth grade, Title I, elementary school with more than four hundred children.
All students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are a proactive school with several before and after-school tutoring and community outreach programs. Our students' families struggle financially, but everyone is dedicated to helping our parents provide for their children.
The educators and support staff are amazing in their dedication and determination to make a difference in the lives of our students.
We have recently partnered with the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center in Orlando to bring new opportunities to our students by producing a Disney musical at our school. Our goal is to give each student the very best education and the best support possible at all times. We will not fail in our mission and our students share our determination to succeed!
My Project
Our school has a Positive Behavior and Intervention Support (PBIS) Store that we call Dolphin Treasure Cove. The store is visited by every student once a week. Students are able to spend their Dolphin dollars that they earn for citizenship in our school store.
Through the use of the school store, we are promoting financial literacy and goal setting, as well as social emotional learning.
We allow students to enter the store and determine which item they would like to save up for, whether it be a book, a toy, a board game, a STEM kit, school supplies, stuffed animals, or sports equipment. Items are organized by price with the lowest priced items at the bottom of the shelves, and increasing in price as they are placed on higher shelves. All items are marked from $1 - $25 Dolphin dollars (our school citizenship money, not real money).
All students are allowed to visit the store one time per week and can only purchase one item per week. This also allows students to set priorities. We discuss the importance of setting goals and saving with the students as well. The use of Dolphin dollars and the Dolphin Treasure Cove school PBIS store also impact social emotional learning (SEL) though self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness.
