Students in my classroom come from fifteen different Native American tribes in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. They live nine months of every year at school, with little to no contact with their families. They come from a variety of home lives but come to school with the hope of a brighter future. Many of my students have become accustomed to not having the newest resources or technology, but they still persevere.
Within a few months of being in my classroom, they learn that they can achieve things that many thought they never would.
They are reading harder books (sometimes even their first chapter book), doing harder math problems, and are able to do their own research on things that interest them.
My Project
Several years ago I began using a classroom economy to help students not only manage their behaviors but also to learn how to be responsible with money. Many of my students come from homes that live paycheck to paycheck so they haven't experienced or witnessed what it is like to save and spend money any other way. In our classroom economy students earn money for completing their classroom jobs, participating in class, and finishing their homework on time. In addition to earning money students have to pay fines when they break rules or need extra supplies such as pencils or erasers.
When the classroom store is open students are eager to purchase items, but sometimes find those really fun items are more expensive.
This teaches them how to save money and to continue to work hard so they can purchase it next time. The various items that I am requesting will be used as items in the store. This system has worked well to model learning financial responsibility for my students in a fun and meaningful way.
