Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in kindergarten. I normally teach first grade, and this year I have the pleasure of working with students one year younger. What a difference a year makes! These students are full of energy and possibilities! They are so excited to enter the world of literacy. I am equally thrilled to be their guide. I need to make sure every need of theirs is met. I have many different strategies in my bag of tricks.
Students in kindergarten are at a terrific time in their growth and development. They love school, and they are extremely excited at the future they will encounter as great readers. Each student deserves every moment in the classroom to be meaningful. Educators have agreed that hands-on activities young students can manipulate on their own have a great impact on their learning. These activities allow the teacher to move about the classroom environment working with small groups or individual students, confidently assured that everyone is productively working. The materials needed for these activities, however, are seldom available in the average public school classroom, for funding is usually scarce, and materials like this are not considered essential.
These materials will help my kindergarten students develop the skills they need to become great readers. The resources are so special because they allow the children to work independently. For instance, upper case and lower case magnetic letters are fabulous because they are held in the palm of the students hands. They are so much more real than a letter written on a board. The other resources will also help students reinforce the fundamentals of reading that I teach them in their own time. They also are fun! They are bright and colorful like the toys they play with at home. Resources like these are priceless!
Having these materials in the classroom will make a world of difference in my students first steps as life-long learners.
