Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember when you realized you could read? Do you remember how it made you feel? The smile on your face must have been amazing. Learning to read should be fun and exciting especially when technology exists to support and enhance learning.
My second grade students live in a diverse and impoverished community with 16 elementary schools.
Our school is over 110 years over and overloaded with children from all over the world. In our school alone, there are over 10 different languages spoken, most with English not spoken at home. Communicating with families can be challenging. Daily we greet 450 curious, hardworking, and grateful students that want to learn. Many of our classrooms have 30 kids or more. Our community is growing and learning from each other all the time.
My Project
It will be wonderful to have my students read stories and hear themselves. A digital recorder will help with confidence and reading fluency while listening, reading along and following along with highlighted words. We can also have many different people from parents, to teachers, to community workers and fellow students read stories that we'll listen to and learn from. It adds a connection to our families and community. Also, to have my students interact with the Smartboard, instead of paper and pencil tasks, while I teach a reading group, will create significant, necessary improvement in reading skills and comprehension. The activities range from beginner skills(Kindergarten)to advanced (2nd grade)skills with having a partner or team to work with and or against. The games incorporate sounds, blending, forming sentences, grammar, comprehension and much, much more. All of these skills are necessary to become fluent grade level readers.
Reading is so important to the confidence and self-esteem of a child to be all that he/she can be.
Achieving their goals and dreams depends on us all, in whatever way we can. Today's kids are our future. READING is where it all begins!!!
