The students in my classroom present as atypical learners on the autism spectrum. They are extremely bright, but tend to learn atypically. These young learners are very curious and enjoy a wide variety of learning experiences.
The right resources have the ability to captivate their interests and increase focus for longer periods of time.
They are also very young and thus, they have a great deal of energy. In order to motivate them, a variety of experiences and activities must be available throughout the day.
These wonderful children learn primarily through exploration using visual, hands-on materials. It is my goal to move my students to more inclusive settings and the ability to sit and read, is an important step in moving the children to a less restrictive environment.
My Project
I am requesting books, writing journals, writing and art supplies, puzzles and classroom materials that are engaging and developmentally appropriate for my students. The majority of my students are on the Autism spectrum or have other speech and language delays. Many of them will be in a school setting for their first time.
In order for my students to learn and progress, their classroom activities must be engaging and developmentally appropriate.
These reading, writing and art materials will help my students focus and learn about various topics and literacy themes. All of my students are capable of learning literacy at varying levels. I am confident that many will learn to read words both by phonetically decoding and through repetition of sight words. Others may learn to label pictures or engage in a read aloud appropriately.
Not only will these materials help my students sit and learn academic skills, but they will help increase social skills because they will be sitting next to one another, speaking to each other and sharing. The benefits of highly motivating reading, writing and play materials are countless and especially important for my atypical learners.
