Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning to read is a complex task that requires that the learner be proficient at multiple tasks at the same time. One of the most important of those skills is the memorization of frequently occurring words, often called "sight words." It is a foundational skill in kindergarten and first grade.
Memorizing sight words makes early reading much easier.
Learners can quickly read those frequently occurring words, which can account for the majority of the words in some books. (Then, he or she can focus their effort on practicing strategies for figuring out the remaining words.) Memorizing these words requires frequent and repeated practice. Research has shown that these words are internalized more quickly when multiple modalities are used. In my class of K and 1, students chant the words with accompanying body movements. They state, read, and write sentences that contain the target word. One of the most successful practices is using magnetic letters to build the words. Students scramble the letters, build the word, notice the shape of the word by scanning the collection of letters, and recite the letter names. Daily, I practice this routine with students in small groups and they do it independently. This requires a very large collection of plastic magnetic letters.
My Project
Unfortunately, I do not have enough of these letters for students to practice as often as they need to. Additionally, I would like to send these plastic letters home with the students who would benefit from continued practice at home. This is a concrete way that parents can help their child learn to read at home.
Your donation will ensure that my students have the resources they need to learn to read.
Furthermore, it will provide a specific activity that parents can do with their children to be involved during their first years in school.
