Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school where a vast majority of the students are living in poverty, English Learners or both. Our school is a safe place for our students and they absolutely love to learn. The majority of my first graders are English Language Learners who are very new to the English language, several who are only getting exposure to the language while at school. As English Language Learners they are working tirelessly to manipulate words and sounds in the English language.
My Project
Students come to first grade knowing their letters and the sounds that those letters make. The majority of year in first grade we work on blending sounds together to make new sounds, blending sounds together to make words, and blending words together to make sentences. This task can become very challenging, and it is extremely important to help students practice these skills in a variety of ways, including: listening to the sounds, matching the letters to the sounds, and writing the letters that match the sounds. Having the opportunity to practice these activities using multi-sensory resources will make this more meaningful for students as well as addressing the different learning styles in the classroom. The Stack and Flip Phonics Books, CVC word building cards, and CVC word ladders are great opportunities for the students to practice CVC decoding and blending strategies. The Phonics Cube sets also allow students to blend words in isolation to move towards applying these strategies in context. Simultaneously, students need to have a bank of sight words in their memories in order to be successful in reading. Many of these words cannot be figured out using the blending strategies; therefore, it is essential that we are giving first graders exposure and practice with those sight words in a fun, engaging, and meaningful ways to allow them to become successful readers and writers. This can be done through the fishing for sight words game, gel writing boards, and the alphabet stamps to also build the sight words.
