At my elementary school, we have a broad spectrum of struggling readers. During Reader's Workshop, we encourage our students to select titles that support their interests in order to build a lifelong love of reading. While our students often express their desire for interesting books they can understand, often, they are only able to access books geared towards young children because they are at their instructional level.
I want to provide interesting, accessible, and relevant literature to my 4th grade students, in order to build their reading skills and foster their love for reading.
My Project
My students need new books that interest them and are on their academic and ability level. Much available literature for 4th grade that will appeal to their maturity and interest are written above their instructional read levels.
In order to teach the necessary reading skills, we need authentic texts at a student’s instructional level but not below their maturity and interests.
Saddleback Publishing is one of a few companies that provide high-interest literature at a variety of reading levels and caters to a wide spectrum of learners. We will use these books for independent reading time, book clubs, conversation, and individual reflection. The characters in these stories are age appropriate and come from diverse cultures and backgrounds. The books' themes, rich images, and accessible language will make reading a joy for our students!
