My first year of teaching was the most rewarding year of my life. As I enter my second year, I want to provide my students with the resources they deserve and need. I am a third grade teacher with students who come from low-income families and lack educational resources and support outside of school. My students are still struggling readers; many of them read well below grade level. Teaching them to read and write, as well as love to read and write, is a major focus each and every school day.

My reading area where the students gather each day for reading and writing instruction is missing an essential resource- an easel. Easels are critical in literacy instruction and I found it very difficult to provide my students with the best reading and writing instruction without one.

Having an easel in my reading area will give my students the chance to see prime examples of good writing as well as provide opportunities for interactive instruction. When children see clear examples and are active in their learning there is a much better chance that they will grasp the skills and concepts. I can't imagine another year of teaching without an easel.
