Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are high school students, but they don't get to have the typical high school experience (which isn't necessarily bad, haha).
These young people are coming from trauma, loss, poverty and injustice.
They are coming from far away, sometimes with family, sometimes alone. Even so, they are in my classroom, every day (sometimes even during lunch), eager to learn, with smiling faces!
They deserve hope.
My job is to teach them beginning English. The job description doesn't include being a mom, nurse, advocate, social worker, and counselor, but oftentimes I am all of those titles. I'm not complaining. All teachers have this job. I feel honored to advocate for, and love my students.
However, we, as teachers, often fund many things we need, but don't have. So, sometimes, we all go without.
One of my big goals is to give them access to the beginning skills needed to read, and that's difficult, because there aren't that many books for teenagers, at a 1st or 2nd grade reading level.
I need relevant topics if I have any chance to get them to take interest. This is where you come in (hopefully).
My Project
By donating to this project, you will not only help to improve, and increase student literacy, you will ultimately help to increase success in their academic career. Being a successful reader is so important! These students deserve a chance to learn, and to love learning. With increased skill in reading, and fluency, they will have that chance. I can't wait to share that a community of people (that my students don't even know) are excited for them to be successful! Thank you for believing in me, and the future of the young people I truly care so much about! You are making a huge difference!
