My students need second grade books in their classroom library as they learn to read.

My Students

The students are 2nd graders in a rural North Carolina elementary school. We have just over 200 students with more than half of the students coming from low‑income households. Students spend their second grade year learning the foundations of reading.

Second grade is the last year that students are LEARNING TO READ.

They begin READING TO LEARN the next school year. So in order to take advantage of this last year of learning to read, my students need a variety of books to harvest this time of learning.

My Project

Classroom libraries are essential for second graders as they are still LEARNING TO READ. The problem is that their teacher--ME--transferred to a new grade and have zero books to add to their classroom library.

These second grade books will build our class library.

They will provide a variety of choices for them to read no matter their interest.

Having a classroom library will enable the students to check out books on their reading level throughout the school day and take them home to share with their families. We just need someone to help us grow this much needed library for our classroom.
